The South Beach Diet is a three phase program. First two phases based on reduced carbohydrates. Third phase a lifetime plan based on healthy recipes and ingredients.  Focus for diabetics. 24/7 support online.  Support discussion groups. Recipe finder software online. Recommendations on eating out. A healthier "Atkins".

Defines fats as either "bad" or "good" based on glycemic index criteria which can interfere with insulin in the body's ability to process fat and sugar. Also maintains that saturated and trans fats contribute to an increase in cardiovascular disease. The diet plan restricts these items accordingly. Carbohydrates and fats are reduced.  Diet helpful for the reduction of cholesterol and lowering blood pressure and bringing blood sugar levels in line

In the first phase, dairy, sugar, candy, bread, potatoes, fruit, cereals, and grains are sharply reduced or avoided to eliminate insulin resistance caused by these items.

Kraft Foods have licensed a line of prepared foods under the label South Beach Living. These products are not included in the weekly cost of the plan.
